WHAT IF

What if you made me happy?
What if you made me smile?
Even, if only for a while.

What if you gave me love?
What if you gave me hope?
With you I learned to cope.

What if you took my heart?
What if you took my life?
With you there was no strife.

What if you lightened the load?
What if you shone the light?
Everything you did was right.

What if you opened my world?
What if you showed me fun?
But I knew that some day you'd run.

What if that day came too soon?
What if that day was full of sorrow?
What if that day was tomorrow?

LOVE

What is this that spears the heart?
That controls all thinking defying logic,
How can it bring squeals of joy and ecstasy?
Then a sullen face, and floods of tears.

What is this invisible force?
That in the past has changed monarchies,
How can it blossom so quickly?
Then die as if blow away by ferocious winds.

What is it that brings a twinkle to the eye?
That shows on the expressions on your face,
How can it be shown in so many different ways?
Then vanish, and leave a heart so badly broken.

What is this blindness that can produce uncontrollable rage?
That can inflict a pain so deep that it scars,
How can it be that sometimes we have no defence against it?
Then produce just an equal a force field that can't be broken.

What is this that can last a lifetime?
That can be with us even without our awareness,
How can we suppress it one minute?
Then portray it with such exuberance the next.

What is this that burns so deep within?
That can bring memories flooding back,
How can it possibly have lasted through thick and thin?
Then be as fresh as the day it first started.

It is without question that thing called love,
The love I first saw in your eyes, in your expression,
Such a small word, with such a profound meaning,
And I love you now, as I always have done.

The Love I Left Behind

I never held your hand, not once
Nor even touched your hair,
Didn't kiss your lips,
Or go for walks,
But my love for you was there.

From the first day that I saw you,
My heart was no longer mine,
Your face, your smile,
I was hooked,
You didn't need to cast a line.

There were times I should have asked you,
But I didn't, I was wrong,
How I wanted to love you,
Then all too soon,
The opportunity was gone.

If I could have my time over,
I wouldn't have left the way I did,
I'd have plucked up the courage,
To ask for your love,
Maybe suffer rejection, heaven forbid.

So many years have passed now,
Thoughts of you still fill my mind,
I know now that I'll love you forever,
No one could replace you,
The love I left behind.

The Mirrored Wall

Upon a mirrored wall I see,
Someone looking back at me,
A willowy figure tall and strange,
If that were me I'd have to change.

Upon a closer inquisitive look,
The person before me shivered and shook,
Then turning to leave, as if by shock,
I stood transfixed like solid rock.

No longer the young man I thought I was,
Years of anguish the probable cause,
As I turned my head to look again,
The reflection I saw was very plain.

No figment of my imagination there,
Left alone, with no one to care,
Reality was such a shock to see,
That willowy figure was really me.

OLD MEG

She walked the hillsides,
By day and by night,
She was always alone,
Such an eerie sight.
Carrying her basket,
Of freshly picked flowers,
Still covered in water droplets,
From the early morning showers.
She strode towards town,
Without a care,
Knowing that folk,
Didn't want her there.
"A bunch for your lady Sir",
She caused such a frown,
Freshly picked this morning,
Only half-a-crown.
She lived on her own,
Only one mouth to feed,
Her clothes were well worn,
With a smell of aniseed.
At the end of the day,
As the sun went down,
She made her way,
Back outside of town.
She'd lived there for years,
But not once did she beg,
She always had something to sell,
The gypsy woman they called, Old Meg.

Heart Of Gold

Remembering your smile, your face,
It's easy, its common place,
The turn of your head, the glance of an eye,
It's hard to believe you were once so shy.

If only we could have that young girl back,
But no, that's impossible; you chose a varied track,
You learnt your trade well, a natural they say,
Then you left this world, a safer place to play.

Your charm, your dignity, your compassion,
You gave it all; you were the height of fashion,
You took on a family that were strong and sure,
But you proved to the world, they were far from pure.

When all is said and done, you still had your share of fun,
Your warmth was hotter than the sun,
Colourful and bright, you shone your light,
But it came to a sudden end on that August night.

Have we done enough since then to make you proud?
I fear not, as I hang my head in a shroud,
All the bickering and bitching, why do they make such a fuss,
The only excuse is your death was hard for us.

It's easy now for us to understand,
We knew you, we saw you lend a hand,
In years to come, should they liken you, to a goddess of old,
We must say no! She was just a princess, with a heart of gold.
